What is Hytale SMP? A Complete Guide for 2026
January 8, 2026
If you're new to Hytale or just hearing about SMPs for the first time, you're in the right place. Let's break it down.
What Does SMP Mean?
SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer. It's a server where players work together (or sometimes against each other) in survival mode. You gather resources, build bases, fight monsters, and explore the world alongside other players.
Think of it like playing the game normally, but with friends and strangers sharing the same world.
How is Hytale SMP Different from Singleplayer?
When you play alone, the world exists just for you. On an SMP, the world keeps running even when you log off. Other players might build next to you, set up shops, or start communities.
This creates something special. You log back in and see what others have built. Towns form naturally. Trading happens between players. It feels like a living world rather than a static one.
Types of Hytale SMP Servers
Not all SMPs are the same. Here are the main types you'll find:
Vanilla SMP - Pure Hytale with no changes. What the developers intended.
Vanilla+ SMP - Mostly vanilla, but with small quality of life additions. Maybe land claiming to protect your builds, or a few helpful commands.
Modded SMP - Servers running custom mods that add new content, mechanics, or features. The cool thing about Hytale is that mods are server-side, so you don't need to download anything to join.
Creator SMP - Private servers for content creators and streamers. Usually invite-only.
Why Play on an SMP?
Playing solo is fun, but SMPs offer something different:
- Community - Meet people who share your interests
- Collaboration - Build projects that would take forever alone
- Economy - Trade with other players, set up shops
- Events - Many servers run community events and activities
- Persistence - Your builds matter because others see them
Finding the Right SMP
The Hytale server scene is still young since the game just launched into early access. Most servers are either private friend groups or run by hosting companies for testing.
Public SMPs that anyone can join are pretty rare right now. That's actually why we started TaleSMP. We wanted a place where players could just hop in and start playing without needing an invite or knowing someone. Learn how to connect if you want to give it a try.
Getting Started
If you want to try SMP gameplay, the basics are simple:
- Launch Hytale
- Click on Servers from the main menu
- Add a server using its IP address and port
- Connect and start playing
Most SMPs will have some basic rules like no griefing or cheating. Check the server's website or Discord for specifics.
Is SMP Right for You?
If you enjoy building, exploring, and don't mind sharing a world with others, SMP is worth trying. It's a different experience from singleplayer, but many players find it more rewarding long term.
The social aspect keeps things interesting. When you build something cool, people actually see it. When you need help, someone might lend a hand. It adds a layer to the game that singleplayer can't match.
Welcome to the world of Hytale SMPs. Hope to see you around.
