Hytale SMP Beginner Tips: Your First 24 Hours
January 12, 2026
Starting on a new SMP can feel overwhelming. Everyone else seems to know what they're doing while you're still figuring out the basics. Here's what you need to know to get through your first day.
First Things First: Get Tools
When you spawn, your priority is basic tools. Look around for sticks and rubble on the ground. Hit bushes to get plant fiber. These basic materials let you craft crude tools right from your inventory.
Press Tab to open crafting. You'll want a hatchet for trees, a pickaxe for mining, and a weapon for the monsters you'll meet soon.
Don't wander far until you have at least these basics. Respawning far from your stuff is frustrating.
Claim Land Early
On most SMPs, land claiming exists for a reason. Other players can't always be trusted, and even accidents happen.
On TaleSMP, you can use /sc to claim an area around you. Do this as soon as you find a spot you like. It takes two seconds and saves you from grief later.
Check what claiming commands your server uses. Every SMP handles this differently.
Stay Near Spawn Initially
It's tempting to run off into the wilderness immediately. Resist that urge for a bit.
Spawn areas usually have useful resources, sometimes community farms or starter supplies, and it's easy to find your way back. Once you have basic gear and understand the lay of the land, then venture out.
Many servers have random teleport commands (like /rtp on TaleSMP) that drop you somewhere far away when you're ready to establish a real base.
Learn the Combat System
Hytale combat isn't like Minecraft. You can't just click rapidly and win. There's timing, stamina, and positioning involved.
Key things to know:
- Attacking doesn't use stamina, but blocking does
- Don't hold block constantly or you'll drain your stamina
- Watch enemy animations to know when to dodge or block
- Your special attack (Q) charges up as you land hits
Start with a sword. It's the most forgiving weapon for beginners. Practice on easier mobs before picking fights with anything scary.
Food is For Healing, Not Hunger
Hytale doesn't have a hunger bar. You won't starve.
But food heals you, so keep some on hand. Red berries are everywhere in the starting zone. Grab them as you explore. When you take damage, eat to recover.
Torches and Cave Navigation
Caves are dark and easy to get lost in. Bring plenty of crude torches.
Here's a trick: place torches on the right wall as you go deeper. When you want to leave, keep torches on your left. Simple system that works.
Also bring extra pickaxes. Nothing worse than getting deep into a cave and having your only pickaxe break.
Death Has Consequences
When you die in Hytale, you lose half of your consumables and resources. Your tools and armor take a durability hit too.
This means dying matters. Don't carry your entire stash of rare materials when exploring dangerous areas. Leave valuables in a chest at your base.
Make Friends
This is multiplayer for a reason. Talk to people. Ask questions in chat. Most SMP players are happy to help newcomers.
Having even one friend on a server makes the experience way better. You can share resources, help each other build, and watch each other's backs.
Check Server Commands
Every SMP has different commands available. Common ones include:
- Teleport commands (home, spawn, random teleport)
- Land claiming
- Player messaging
- Server info
Usually typing /help shows you what's available. Some servers have signs at spawn explaining everything.
Don't Rush
Hytale isn't going anywhere. You don't need to have the best gear and biggest base by day two.
Take time to learn the game. Explore. Make mistakes. The early game is actually fun if you don't stress about keeping up with everyone else.
Join a Server That Fits
Not all SMPs are the same. Some are competitive, some are casual. Some have lots of mods, some are vanilla. Find one that matches how you want to play.
If you want something straightforward where you can just start playing without complexity, TaleSMP keeps things simple. No crazy rules, no pay-to-win, just survival multiplayer on solid hardware. Here's how to join.
Whatever server you choose, give yourself time to settle in. The first day is always the hardest. By day three, you'll feel at home.
