How to Join a Hytale SMP Server (Step-by-Step)
January 10, 2026
Joining a Hytale server is pretty straightforward once you know where to look. Here's how to do it.
What You Need
Before connecting to any server, make sure:
- You own Hytale and have it installed
- You're logged into your Hytale account
- You have the server's IP address and port number
That last part is important. Every server has an address (like play.example.com or 123.45.67.89) and a port number. The default port for Hytale is 5520, but some servers use different ones.
Method 1: Direct Connect (Quick Join)
This is the fastest way to jump into a server.
- Open Hytale
- Click Servers from the main menu
- Click Direct Connect at the bottom right
- Type in the server address (example:
play.talesmp.com) - Click Connect
- Enter the password if the server has one
That's it. You should load into the server within a few seconds.
Method 2: Add Server (Save It)
If you plan to play on a server regularly, save it to your list.
- Open Hytale
- Click Servers from the main menu
- Click Add Server
- Enter a name for the server (this is just for you to remember it)
- Enter the server address in the Connection Address field
- Click Add Server
Now the server will show up in your list every time you open the game. Just click on it and hit Connect.
Understanding Server Addresses
Server addresses usually look like one of these:
play.servername.com:5520(domain name with port)123.45.67.89:5520(IP address with port)play.servername.com(domain only, uses default port)
If no port is given, Hytale assumes the default port of 5520.
Version Matching
One thing that trips people up: your game version needs to match the server's version exactly. If the server is running a different version, you'll see a "Version Mismatch" error.
Most servers update quickly after new Hytale patches. If you can't connect, check if there's been a recent update and give the server a bit of time to update too.
Connection Issues?
If you're having trouble connecting:
- Double check the address for typos
- Make sure you included the port number
- Check if the server is online (their Discord usually has status updates)
- Hytale uses UDP, not TCP. Some firewalls block this by default
- Try restarting your game
Finding Servers to Join
The Hytale server scene is still growing. Most public server lists are filled with servers that are either testing or not fully set up yet.
If you're looking for a stable SMP to join, TaleSMP is open to everyone. We've been running since launch day on dedicated hardware, so connection quality stays solid even during busy times. Check our connect page for the server address and you're in.
After You Connect
Once you're in, take a minute to learn the server's rules. Most SMPs have basic guidelines about griefing, PvP, and general behavior. Check for signs at spawn or ask in chat.
Many servers also have helpful commands. On TaleSMP, you can use /rtp to teleport to a random location and /sc to claim land so nobody can mess with your builds.
Happy exploring.
